The STEM & ICT Skills for the Girls of Coastal Area (SISGCA) initiative, supported by the Malala Fund in collaboration with BdOSN, conducted science classes on September 9, 2024, at Shahid Ali Ahammad Govt. Girls High School and Shahid Kamel Model High School in Tala, Satkhira. A total of eighty students from grades six to eight participated in these educational sessions.
The primary objective of these workshops was to equip students with the necessary skills to stay abreast of developments in science and technology. This initiative aims to enhance the spread of scientific knowledge among students. However, educational opportunities are declining for various reasons, particularly in coastal regions where girls often fall behind boys in science and technology education. The prevailing social conditions frequently hinder girls from rural areas from pursuing higher education. By engaging in hands-on science assessments, students will find it easier to develop skills and take part in various science competitions, thereby elevating the nation's profile in both national and international arenas.
The sessions were facilitated by Farzana Akter Lima and Era Asrafi, who provided valuable insights into different physics topics. The facilitators discussed experimental subjects and the latest findings from scientists in Bangladesh, emphasizing their contributions. Additionally, the discussion included the environmental benefits of utilizing jute-made poly bags for soil health. Throughout the session, students examined the concept of density and its significance in buoyancy. They were also encouraged to adopt measures for environmental protection.
