Two-day Grace Hopper Girls’ Programming Camp held at City University, Panthapath, Dhaka. The camp was organized in collaboration with Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) and City University. A total of 40 students from the Computer Science and Engineering Department participated in the camp.
The camp is organized mainly to improve the skills of programming for undergraduate female students. Now-a-days women students are not entering the workplace due to lack of proper skills while studying at university level with science and information technology. And BDOSN is working towards that goal.
The programming camp was started from 9am on 5 October, 2019. Throughout the day, students gain an understanding of the basic programming language, starting with the basic concepts of programming. The camp provides a complete guide on how to solve complex problems with coding. The camp was inaugurated by the university's Computer Science and Engineering Department head and associate professor Md Safayet Hossain and lecturer Sharmin Akhter. Grace Hopper Girls Programming Camp concludes with a programming contest on October 6th. The crests and certificates were handed over to the first 3 female students in the contest
Also that morning a job-preparation workshop was organized at the same institution. A total of 34 women students participated in this workshop. Nusrat Farah, BDOSN's Assistant Program Officer, conducted a session on what kind of preparation needed to be done before entering the workplace after completing academic studies. Direct access to a job is a time-consuming affair with the payroll of education.
She talked about how an internship can be helpful in making a female student prepare herself for entering the workplace. Instructions are also given to the student regarding proper application for the job or internship.
Program Officer of 3-year ESDG project of Bangladesh Open Source Network, Md. Raihan Islam, said that BDSOSN will organize various skill development training in addition to Grace Hopper Programming Camp so that female students who are studying information technology in different sections of Bangladesh do not fall short of skills.
