A 16 days activism has been organized by ‘Take Back the Tech Bangladesh’ to highlight the and prevent violence against women. On November 29th, 2020, a session on ‘Behavior in online to prevent the cybercrime’ as a part of the activism, where the importance of awareness to prevent online harassment and violence was discussed briefly. The guest for the session was Ms. Tawhida Jahan Assistant Professor & Chairperson Department of Communication Disorders Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Dhaka and the session was hosted by Ms. Mahbuba Sultana Coordinator, Take Back The Tech Bangladesh.
The Corona pandemic situation has made us spend more time online and if compared to the pre-pandemic, the rate of cybercrime has increased dramatically. The most noticeable change is online behavior. Ms. Tawhida Jahan commented that when a person gets introduced to the online world, he gets to know about a completely different world which astonishes him. In the physical world, everyone has a place of respect where one can identify others according to their age or class. But in the virtual world, everyone is referred to as a friend and the word ‘friend’ has such vast meanings. Not everyone can understand the depth and variety of the meanings of friendship, which leads to unacceptable behavior in the virtual world.
Ms. Mahbuba Sultana said different groups, organizations are continuously giving their effort to make the people aware of the incidents that can happen online and how the online behavior should be. Despite all the effort the cybercrime rate is still up there. This is mainly due to the lack of interest in learning. Ms. Tawhida Jahan added that the behavior pattern depends on the brain's deep structure and surface structure. Deep structure grows by everyday experience and surface structure is a place where we do daily talking. When a person does online bullying, we should first analyse the place where he lives and for which part of the society is causing him to do such behavior. To improve this condition everyone should pay attention to the social values, religious values and family values.
When someone faces something inappropriate or something that he does not like and if he misbehaves on that, that will be considered as cyberbullying. “What should one do to avoid such a situation?”, asked Ms. Mahbuba Sultana. Ms. Tawhida Jahan replied that one should not react immediately upon seeing something inappropriate. He should take time and try to know the actual situation or perspective. To completely avoid such situations, we should be more careful in the actions we take online.
Ms. Mahbuba Sultana added that sometimes a person tries to provoke someone to misbehave. “What should one do if he faces such provocation?”, asked Ms. Mahbuba Sultana. Ms. Tawhida Jahan replied to that by saying “One should stay calm and should not take any action at that moment. It will be better if you talk to the person face to face and ask why that person is showing such behavior.” Ms. Mahbuba Sultana asked again, “What should a person do to control himself in such a situation?”. Ms. Tawhida Jahan said that We all grew up in a family from a young age so we should start this practice with our family. Parents need to keep an eye on what their child is learning in digital media. Parents need to be friendly with their children.
So, if we are a little aware, it is possible to prevent this cyber crime online.
Finally, the ceremony was concluded by thanking everyone.
