Take Back the Tech has organized a 16 days long program to highlight the occurring violence against women and to discuss the prevention of those acts of violence. As a part of the program, the third episode went air on December 1st, 2020. This episode mainly focused on the Bangladeshi law regarding cybercrime and implementation opportunities of law to make the women aware of the legal laws and actions that a woman can take if she faces any kind of online harassment or violence. The guest of the session was Jobayda Yousuf Mim, Head of Legal Affairs, youth empowerment facilitations- YEF Global and the program was hosted by Mahbuba Sultana, Coordinator, Take back the Tech Bangladesh.

Ms. Jobayda Yousuf Mim discussed the problems and harassment a woman faces in daily life. And how such acts impacts a woman’s life. She also discussed the security threats a woman faces both in physical and virtual environments and this harassment can happen to women of any age. She explained all the major cyber laws that can help a woman to get rid of such violence which will eventually help to improve the internet as a secure place for women. She said most of the harassment (such as blackmailing, torture, etc.) comes from the people who know us well and advised everyone not to do the acts which can later be used against us. She also said that “The Internet has always been a hard place to survive for a woman”. The Cybercrime Department has some very effective rules and regulations against online harassment and the department is quick enough to take actions against the wrongful.

“Most of the women do not take actions against the wrongful because they do not have the proper knowledge about the rules” said Ms. Mahbuba Sultana. The culture is also a major fact that is responsible for such acts. Society has taught us that women should not take such actions as it will ruin her honor in society. Sometimes even a woman does not get help from her family. “We really need to change this culture and make the society aware of the laws and actions that are available to help the woman ”
The session was closed by thanking everyone; especially the cybercrime department.
