Introduction to Computer Vision in Robotics Workshop Successfully Completed Under Road to IRO Initiative

A specialized workshop titled Introduction to Computer Vision to Inspect Cultural Heritages has been successfully completed as part of the Road to IRO Workshop Series. This initiative was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Robot Olympiad and the Bangladesh Open Source Network with the goal of strengthening the preparation of students for the International Robot Olympiad.

This year’s International Robot Olympiad theme emphasizes the development of intelligent robotic systems powered by Artificial Intelligence to address real challenges in cultural heritage domains. Within this context, Computer Vision plays a vital role by enabling robots to interpret and analyze visual information from the real world.

Through Computer Vision, robotic systems can examine images, recognize meaningful patterns, and respond to complex situations with accuracy and speed. In cultural heritage applications, this capability is especially important for documentation, inspection, and analysis of historical assets.

The workshop was designed to introduce participants to both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of Computer Vision in robotics. Students explored how visual data from cultural heritage sites can be processed using image processing techniques to support intelligent robotic behavior. Participants worked directly with real images of cultural heritage sites in Vienna and implemented core Computer Vision techniques in structured exercises.

Throughout the workshop, students engaged in hands on activities that guided them through essential topics in Computer Vision. These included color detection, edge detection, face detection, object detection, shape detection, etc.

By working with real world visual data, participants gained a clearer understanding of how different algorithms function and how they can be combined to extract meaningful information from images. This practical exposure helped bridge the gap between conceptual learning and real implementation in robotics systems.

This initiative reflects the ongoing commitment of the Bangladesh Robot Olympiad and the Bangladesh Open Source Network to equip students with relevant technical skills and prepare them for international level robotics competitions. Through programs like this, students are encouraged to explore advanced technologies and apply them in meaningful real world contexts.
